Program Description
The Traditional ASN Option is a two-year associate-level nursing program designed to prepare students for positions in the nursing profession. The curriculum is designed to produce highly trained, technically advanced, competent, and caring individuals who are prepared to practice professional nursing in a variety of health care settings.
The purpose of the program is to provide the learner with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude to practice competently and safely as a beginning nurse generalist in a variety of acute and long-term care settings. The nurse is viewed as a caring, holistic person who possesses critical thinking and problem-solving skills, integrity, accountability, a theoretical knowledge base, refined psychomotor skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Program graduates receive an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Upon successful completion of the NCLEX-RN and licensure by the Georgia Board of Nursing, graduates are employable as registered nurses in a variety of health care settings.

HESI A2 Information
The HESI A2 may be taken no more than twice per calendar year, and scores are valid for one year from the test date. Program Format and Scheduling
The Traditional ASN Option is delivered in a full-time, daytime format. Program instruction is scheduled Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the duration of the program. Evening, weekend, and alternative options are not available for didactic instruction.
Clinical education requirements are established by the Georgia Board of Nursing (GBON). Although the program makes every reasonable effort to schedule clinical experiences within the Monday through Thursday instructional timeframe, students may be required to attend clinical activities outside these hours to meet program and regulatory requirements.
Health and Clinical Clearance Requirements
Students are required to meet all immunization and health clearance requirements established by the College and its clinical facility partners. Compliance with these requirements is mandatory for participation in clinical experiences and is a condition of continued enrollment in the Traditional ASN Option.
Required immunizations and documentation may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR): Two documented doses of the MMR vaccine or positive serologic titers demonstrating immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella are required.
- Varicella (Chickenpox): Two documented doses of the vaccine or a positive titer demonstrating immunity are required. A self-reported history of chickenpox is not acceptable documentation.
- Hepatitis B: Completion of a two- or three-dose vaccine series, depending on the manufacturer, is required, along with a post-vaccination titer demonstrating immunity.
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap): Documentation of vaccination within the past ten years is required.
- Influenza (Flu): Documentation of vaccination for the current influenza season is required annually. The influenza season begins in September.
- COVID-19: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and any applicable booster doses, if received, is required. Students who decline vaccination must complete a signed refusal affidavit in accordance with clinical facility requirements.
- QuantiFERON-TB Gold: QuantiFERON-TB Gold is the preferred tuberculosis screening test and is valid for one year. No additional PPD testing is required if this test is submitted. Students may obtain this test in advance, if desired.
- Titers: Serologic titers are required to demonstrate immunity when vaccination records are unavailable or when required by a clinical facility partner.
Progression Requirements
Grading standards for the Associate of Science in Nursing program are stringent. To progress to the next course of study, students must earn a minimum grade of “C” in every nursing course. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 to remain in the program.
Candidate Selection
Admission to the Traditional ASN Option is competitive and is based on a weighted selection formula that includes the following factors:
- Cumulative GPA in required general education and prerequisite courses, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 required.
- HESI A2 examination score, with a minimum score of 70 required to apply.
- Program application date.
Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Application deadlines vary by cohort. Applicants are encouraged to consult with an Allied Health Advisor or the Allied Health Programs Office for current application dates and requirements.
Available seats are awarded in rank order, beginning with the highest-scoring applicants, until maximum enrollment is reached. In the event of a tie, the student’s application date will serve as the determining factor.
All applicants will be notified of their acceptance or denial status within three to four weeks following the ASN Program application deadline. Official notifications will be sent exclusively to the student’s Southern Crescent Technical College email account.
